Benni McCarthy – Rashford Effect Influences Mabena Ahead Of Soweto Derby

Ndumiso Mabena, a striker for the Orlando Pirates, claims that his analysis of Marcus Rashford was influenced by that of his former teammate Benni McCarthy.

On Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will square in a heated battle. Mabena, the Pirates striker, might attempt to win the derby again. He claims to be attentively observing Benni’s output.

McCarthy has been praised for his impressive work in developing Rashford into a phenomenal striker for Manchester United. The former Bafana Bafana player now serves as a specialist coach for forwards on Erik Ten Hag’s backroom staff.

Mabena, who played alongside McCarthy during his initial tenure at Pirates, is closely monitoring his former teammate’s progress at Old Trafford. After returning to the Buccaneers, the 35-year-old forward is eager for another opportunity to compete in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Mabena considers McCarthy, his former teammate and role model, to be a valuable source of learning.

According to IOL, Mabena said that McCarthy has been his role model throughout his football career, and he is proud to see him coaching at Manchester United. Mabena also stated that McCarthy’s work with Marcus Rashford has been impressive and a source of learning for him and his teammates.

After leaving Pirates in 2014, Mabena returned in December 2022 and made his first appearance on February 4. He expressed his happiness to be back at the club and shared his experiences of playing in finals with his teammates.

As the Soweto Derby approaches, Mabena faces tough competition to secure a spot in the matchday squad on Saturday. Terrence Dzvukamanja has been the preferred starter as a lone striker, while Kabelo Dlamini and Kermit Erasmus have also been getting playing time. January signing Souaibou Marou made his debut against Maritzburg United and could receive more playing time against Kaizer Chiefs.

Mabena will be working hard in training to impress coach Jose Riveiro and secure a spot in the squad for the upcoming game against Kaizer Chiefs.
