Kaizer Chiefs’ struggles to compete for major titles have been attributed to a lack of experience by Sekhukhune United defender, Daniel Cardoso. In an interview ahead of this weekend’s highly-anticipated clash between his current side and his former team, Cardoso expressed his belief that the absence of seasoned campaigners has hindered Chiefs’ ability to compete for silverware.

Chiefs’ rebuilding phase

At the end of last season, Kaizer Chiefs went through a major overhaul, offloading several experienced players, including the likes of Bernard Parker, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Leonardo Castro, and Daniel Akpeyi. The exodus came as Chiefs marked the start of a new era under homegrown coach Arthur Zwane, who has been tasked with rebuilding the team. While the club’s current squad has impressed many with their youthfulness and exuberance, Cardoso feels the absence of senior figures will ultimately cost them in their quest to end an eight-year trophy drought.

Youthfulness not enough

Cardoso’s comments suggest that while the youthfulness of Chiefs’ current squad has led them to a Nedbank Cup semi-final and fourth position on the league table, it may not be enough to compete for major titles.

“I don’t want to open up a can of worms, but youngsters are not going to win you titles and trophies,” said Cardoso. “If you look at [Mamelodi] Sundowns’ team, they’re experienced players, that’s why they win trophies season in, season out.”

Experience is key

Cardoso’s argument is that experience is key to success in football. He points out that Sundowns, who are currently at the top of the league table, have a team full of experienced players. “To win titles and trophies, I think you need far more experience, especially on the field. I mean, they [Chiefs] have quite a few experienced players sitting in the stands and at home, and I think it’s been missed for them,” said Cardoso.

Is Cardoso right?

Cardoso’s comments raise an interesting question: is experience the key to success in football? While there is no doubt that experience can be a crucial factor in a team’s success, it is not the only one. A team’s ability to work together, tactical awareness, and mental strength are all important factors as well. In addition, it is worth noting that Chiefs’ current squad has shown a lot of promise this season, and it may only be a matter of time before they start winning major titles.
