Kaizer Chiefs Face Contract Decisions for Six Players

Kaizer Chiefs, one of the top football clubs in South Africa, will have to make some tough decisions in the coming months regarding the future of six of their players whose contracts expire in less than three months. Head coach Arthur Zwane has already highlighted that his side is a work in progress, and he expects more changes during the off-season.

Eric Mathoho’s Contract is Unlikely to be Renewed

Eric Mathoho, a center-back for Kaizer Chiefs, is one of the players whose contract expires on June 30th, and reports suggest that the club is unlikely to renew his contract. Mathoho has been with Amakhosi for 13 years, and the decision to not renew his contract would end his spell with the club.

It is not just Mathoho whose contract is set to expire. The future of Itumeleng Khune, who is the longest-serving member in the team since he was promoted in 2004, is also uncertain. Khune, 35, will see his current contract expire in June, and while he has lost the No. 1 spot to Brandon Petersen, there are chances that he might be kept.

Uncertainty Over Khama Billiat’s Future

Khama Billiat, who unfortunately cannot fight for a new deal on the field as he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury, is another player whose contract expires at the end of the campaign. Chiefs are yet to indicate whether they’ll keep him beyond June. Billiat was named the PSL Footballer of the Season in the 2015/16 season and joined Chiefs in 2018/19 from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Other Players with Expiring Contracts

In addition to the above players, Cole Alexander, Phathutshedzo Nange, and S’fiso Hlanti are also facing uncertain futures as their contracts will also expire in June. However, Hlanti is expected to be offered a new deal due to his permanent role in Zwane’s line-ups.

Chiefs have a lot to think about, as the decisions they make regarding the contracts of these six players will undoubtedly have an impact on the team’s performance. It will be interesting to see what the club decides to do in the coming months.
