Rulani Mokwena Clinches Back-to-Back DStv Premiership Coach of the Season Award

During the prestigious Premier Soccer League awards ceremony held on Sunday night, the much-anticipated announcement of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership Coach of the Season took place. Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Rulani Mokwena, emerged victorious, triumphing over formidable contenders Jose Riveiro and Gavin Hunt.

This notable achievement marks Mokwena’s second consecutive Coach of the Season accolade, having previously shared the honor with Manqoba Mngqithi in the 2021/22 season. Mokwena assumed the sole leadership role at Sundowns in October, following a restructuring of the club’s technical team by the club’s management.

Under his guidance, Sundowns soared to clinch their sixth consecutive DStv Premiership title, accomplishing the remarkable feat with an astounding seven games remaining.

Impressively, Mokwena remains unbeaten in his 20 league matches as head coach, securing victory in 14 encounters, including a remarkable winning streak of 11 consecutive games, and settling for draws in the remaining six matches.

It is worth noting that the Coach of the Season award exclusively recognizes performances within the DStv Premiership and does not consider achievements in the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. Those particular honors were secured by Jose Riveiro, who steered Orlando Pirates to victory in both tournaments while also guiding the team to a commendable second-place finish.

Gavin Hunt also made a significant impact during the campaign, leading SuperSport United to a commendable third-place finish and successfully securing their qualification for the CAF Confederations Cup.
