FIFA Lifts Suspension on Zimbabwe and Appoints Normalization Committee

The world football governing body, FIFA, has made the decision to lift the suspension on Zimbabwe and has appointed a normalization committee to oversee the country’s football affairs.

This comes after Zimbabwe was suspended by FIFA in February of the previous year due to third-party interference.

The suspension was a result of the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) of Zimbabwe suspending the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) executive, led by Felton Kamambo, for various allegations, including a failure to account for public funds.

Negotiations and Softening of Stance

A delegation from FIFA visited Zimbabwe last week and engaged in negotiations with key stakeholders, including Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry, the SRC, and the Kamambo-led board.

These negotiations have resulted in FIFA softening its stance and subsequently lifting the suspension.

FIFA confirmed this decision in a letter obtained by Soccer24, also announcing the appointment of a normalization committee.

Appointment of Normalization Committee

The newly appointed normalization committee will assume responsibility for managing ZIFA affairs until June 2024. This committee will work towards resolving any existing issues and restoring normalcy to the football association.

Its primary objective is to ensure that football activities in Zimbabwe are conducted in accordance with FIFA regulations and standards.

Implications for Zimbabwe Football

With the suspension lifted, Zimbabwe will now be eligible to participate in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The draw for the African qualifiers will take place in Cotonou, Benin, on Wednesday. This presents a renewed opportunity for Zimbabwe to compete on the international stage and showcase its football talent.

Press Conference by the SRC

The Sports and Recreation Commission will hold a press conference tomorrow morning to provide the nation with an update on the developments surrounding FIFA’s decision to lift the suspension.

This press conference will serve as a platform to communicate the next steps and share important information with the public.
