Marumo Gallants Earn Vital Draw in First Leg CAF Confederation Cup Quarterfinal

Marumo Gallants, one of the South African underdogs in the competition, have secured a vital away draw in their first leg CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal match against Pyramids FC. The match was held at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

A Monumental Defensive Performance by Gallants

Pyramids FC, who boasted one of the most expensively assembled squads in African football, were expected to dominate the game. However, Marumo Gallants, true to their nature, defied expectations with a monumental defensive performance.

In the first half, Gallants held Pyramids to a goalless draw despite having less than 35% of the ball possession. Mpho Mvelase was a standout player on the night, helping to hold out the scoring potential of Pyramids’ Ranga Chavaviro.

Gallants Take the Lead with a Clear Game Plan

Marumo Gallants’ clear game plan was to hold out against Pyramids’ attacking threats and it paid off when Ranga Chavaviro headed home the opener just before the hour mark. This was Chavaviro’s 15th goal of the season and it stunned Jamie Pacheco’s side. He almost doubled the lead with a silky run and left-footed shot moments later.

End-to-End Football in the Second Half

Both teams struggled to find the net in the second half despite the game opening up towards the end. Marumo Gallants held on to their lead, looking set to secure a historic away win against Pyramids. However, in the dying minutes of the game, second-half substitute Sibusiso Kumalo was penalized for handball, giving Pyramids a penalty. Ramadan Sobhi converted the penalty, securing a 1-1 draw for Pyramids.

Looking Ahead to the Second Leg

Marumo Gallants have taken a vital away goal back to South Africa, putting them in a strong position for the second leg. The South African underdogs have shown that they can compete at the highest level and will be looking to build on their impressive defensive performance in the first leg. Pyramids FC, on the other hand, will be looking to improve their attacking threat and overturn the away goal deficit in the second leg.
