Head to Head: Who Reigns Supreme Between Kaizer Chiefs’ Basomboli And Orlando Pirates’ Marou

During the recent transfer window, both of the Soweto giants strengthened their striking departments. However, the question remains: which club made the better signing?

Christian Basomboli Saile and Souaibou Marou are both potential debutants in the upcoming match, which is considered the biggest game in South African football. Basomboli has already established himself as a regular player for Kaizer Chiefs, while Marou made his debut for Orlando Pirates last weekend against Maritzburg United.

Where did they come from

Christian Basomboli Saile was signed by Kaizer Chiefs from Zambian Super League club Nchanga Rangers. He caught the eye of coach Arthur Zwane during a trial stint at the club in December of last year.

Meanwhile, Souaibou Marou was bought by Orlando Pirates from Cameroonian champions Coton Sport for a fee of approximately R3.4 million. There were also rumors linking him to a move to German club Armenia Bielefeld.

Similar Players

Both Basomboli and Marou, who are 22 years old, have been club captains at their previous teams and share several similarities on the pitch.

They are left-footed players known for their explosive speed and ability to take on defenders on the flanks. Additionally, they have the tendency to cut inside to take shots or make passes to their teammates.

Furthermore, they can also play as center-forwards due to their physicality and ability to hold up the ball.

International Career

Basomboli has yet to earn a call-up to the DR Congo national team, despite starting his career at top-flight club Saint Eloi Lupopo in his home country.

In contrast, Marou has gained valuable international experience, representing Cameroon at both under-23 and senior levels. He was even a part of the Indomitable Lions squad that competed in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although he did not feature in any of the matches for the five-time African champions.

Goals

Basomboli found the back of the net 34 times during his three-and-a-half-year stint with Rangers, with seven of those goals being scored in the Super League.

Meanwhile, Marou scored 30 goals for Coton Sport over the course of five years, after being promoted to the first team from the club’s academy in 2018.

Achievements

Basomboli’s impressive scoring record of 19 goals in the 2021-22 Zambian Division One season earned him the coveted Golden Boot award. Furthermore, his contributions were crucial in helping Rangers secure promotion to the Super League.

In contrast, Marou had a breakthrough season in Cameroon during the 2021-22 campaign, scoring 21 goals across all competitions and leading Coton Sport to a league (Elite One) and cup double. As a result of his exceptional performances, he received the inaugural Cameroonian Ballon d’Or award as the country’s best player. Additionally, he helped Coton lift the 2021 Elite One title.

Impact In South African Football

Basomboli has made a promising start at Chiefs, having scored one goal and provided one assist in four appearances across all competitions.

On the other hand, Marou has only made one official appearance for Pirates, coming on as a substitute against Maritzburg. Nonetheless, he showed glimpses of his abilities during that match.
