SuperSport United’s head coach, Gavin Hunt, has expressed his admiration for his team’s qualification for the CAF Confederations Cup, despite narrowly missing out on second place.

SuperSport suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United on the final day of the season, resulting in a third-place finish with 51 points. The loss meant they fell three points behind Pirates, thus failing to secure a spot in the prestigious CAF Champions League.

However, Hunt commended his players for surpassing expectations and securing a spot in the Confederations Cup, ahead of larger and more prominent clubs. Speaking after the match, he emphasized the significance of this accomplishment for a club of SuperSport’s size.

“We are still in the Confed Cup, a club of our size to be there ahead of other clubs who are much bigger than we are, it’s a huge achievement, huge achievement,” Hunt stated with pride.

Looking ahead to the upcoming competition, Hunt acknowledged the need to strengthen the squad during the off-season to ensure a competitive performance. He acknowledged the importance of finding the right blend and balance within the team.

The coach acknowledged that SuperSport fell short in the race for second place, emphasizing missed opportunities to secure that position earlier in the season. Reflecting on drawn matches, he lamented the lost points that could have secured the desired spot weeks ago.

While missing out on the CAF Champions League may be disappointing for SuperSport United, their qualification for the CAF Confederations Cup should not be understated. Competing in an international tournament is a significant accomplishment for any club, particularly one of smaller stature.

This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of the players, as well as the guidance of Gavin Hunt as head coach.

SuperSport United’s journey in the CAF Confederations Cup will undoubtedly present new challenges and opportunities for growth. As they prepare for the competition, the club will focus on strengthening the team and rectifying their shortcomings. With the right mix and balance of players, SuperSport will strive to make a mark in the Confederations Cup and demonstrate their resilience on the continental stage.
