DStv Premiership Has the Worst Penalty Conversion Rate Worldwide

According to the CIES Football Observatory, the DStv Premiership has the lowest penalty conversion rate of 71.4% out of 75 football leagues worldwide. The Swiss-based football analytics Institute analyzed the frequency of penalties awarded by referees since 1 January 2020. The global average penalty frequency is one penalty every 271 minutes, but in the DStv Premiership, one penalty is awarded only every 310 minutes, which is significantly lower than in the other leagues.

Penalty Awards Comparison

The Egyptian Premier League is leading the list with the most penalties awarded, with one penalty awarded every 172 minutes. The Saudi Pro League and the Russian Premier League rank second and third, respectively, with a penalty awarded every 178 and 187 minutes. Meanwhile, the DStv Premiership ranks last in terms of penalty frequency.

Penalty Conversion Rate and Recent Misses

Despite the low penalty frequency, players in the DStv Premiership have the highest conversion rate of spot-kicks. However, several players have missed penalties this season, including Bradley Grobler, who missed his chance to score from the spot in SuperSport United’s 0-0 draw with Marumo Gallants. AmaZulu’s Bongi Ntuli also failed to score against Darren Keet, while Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana missed a penalty against Velile Mothwa in January. Stellenbosch’s Junior Mendieta missed two penalties this season against Chippa United and Sekhukhune United in December and January, respectively.

Worst Conversion Rate

Since 1 January 2020, the DStv Premiership has had the worst conversion rate from the penalty spot compared to other leagues worldwide. The conversion rate is also low in the Portuguese Primeira Liga (73.4%) and the Spanish Liga (74.9%), while the French Ligue 1 and the Qatar Stars League have achieved a record-high of 82.2%.
