“In 2021, I became a member of FIFPRO’s Global Player Council, a group that advocates for the rights of professional footballers. The council, which includes players such as Giorgio Chiellini, Lucy Bronze, and Arturo Vidal, offers a player’s perspective on a variety of issues, including employment standards, the international match calendar, social media abuse, and the use of personal data.

One of the primary reasons I joined the council was to address the problem of fake agents, a growing concern, especially in Africa. Having grown up in Zimbabwe, I have witnessed many of my friends and former teammates lose their hard-earned money to people posing as football agents. These fake agents promised players opportunities to play in Europe, only to take their money and disappear.

As players, we need to heed the warnings we receive from FIFPRO and player unions about fake agents. We must take responsibility for seeking advice from our unions before engaging with anyone claiming to be an agent. If someone approaches us on social media with a club offer, it only takes a quick call to our union to verify whether the agent is registered with FIFA.

By working together through our unions, we can find solutions to problems without putting ourselves at risk as individuals. When we speak out collectively, we have a stronger voice, and we can better address the issues that affect us as players.

I first got involved with the domestic union of Zimbabwe before joining FIFPRO Africa when I started playing for the senior national team in 2018. As someone who is not afraid to speak out, I believe it is important to use my voice to raise awareness of issues that affect us as players, and to help find solutions that benefit future generations.

Unfortunately, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) was suspended from international football after the Sports and Recreation Commission Zimbabwe (SRC) interfered, a violation of FIFA regulations. This suspension prevents Zimbabwean clubs from competing in the CAF Champions League, and the men’s, women’s, and junior national teams from playing in international competitions.

The impact of this suspension is far-reaching, affecting not only the players but also the country’s economy. Zimbabwe has been denied the opportunity to celebrate the national team’s success and showcase its talent on the world stage. Players who have moved to Europe and elsewhere have demonstrated the potential of Zimbabwean football, and it is crucial that we address the challenges that prevent our country from achieving its full potential.

As players, we have the power to effect change by speaking out about these issues. By using our collective voice through our unions, we can advocate for positive change and help future generations of African players achieve their full potential.

Joining FIFPRO’s Global Player Council has provided me with a platform to raise awareness of these issues and help ensure that the voices of African players are heard. I will continue to use my voice to advocate for positive change and to help the next generation of African footballers achieve their dreams.”
