No Comment: Mokwena Refuses To Discuss Percy Tau’s Al Ahly Form

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena has declined to comment on Percy Tau’s progress at Al Ahly out of respect for his former player’s current club.

Mokwena and Tau had a strong relationship during their time together at Sundowns, with Mokwena playing a significant role in Tau’s growth as a footballer and as a person.

Since then, Mokwena has ascended to the head coach position at Sundowns, while Tau has continued to excel in his own right. He moved to England to join Brighton & Hove Albion but spent most of his time there out on loan in Belgium due to work-permit issues before finally representing the club in 2021.

Despite his short stint at Brighton, Tau’s performances caught the attention of Al Ahly, where he has had both ups and downs. Mokwena’s reluctance to speak about Tau’s progress at Al Ahly is understandable, given his bias towards the forward and his respect for the Egyptian giants.

Percy Tau has been a key player for Al Ahly in their bid to win the Champions League since the arrival of coach Marcel Koller and being injury-free. The team drew 2-2 against Mamelodi Sundowns in the first match of the group stage in Cairo.

Tau’s return to South Africa for the second match against Sundowns at Loftus will mark his first homecoming since Rhulani Mokwena became head coach. In their last visit to Pretoria with Tau in the team, Al Ahly lost 1-0.

When asked about Tau’s progress at Al Ahly, Mokwena stated, “Percy is playing in completely different positions. In the last three games, he played in completely different positions compared to the last game against us in Cairo. But he’s a very good player and one of our best exports.”

However, out of respect for Al Ahly and the fact that Tau is not a Sundowns player, Mokwena declined to comment further on the forward’s performance. Despite this, Tau remains a player to watch in the upcoming match between Sundowns and Al Ahly.
