Ntseki’s Insight on Matlou’s Limited Playtime
In a recent statement, Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, Molefi Ntseki gave his insights on George Matlou’s playtime.
He also expressed his admiration for the development of midfielder George Matlou. Ntseki suggests that injuries have been a significant hurdle in Matlou’s progress since his arrival at the club.
Matlou’s Arrival and Potential
George Matlou, a 25-year-old midfielder, moved to Kaizer Chiefs from Moroka Swallows during the previous season.
This transfer was accompanied by high expectations, as Matlou had previously displayed glimpses of his quality, earning him a transfer to Portugal while he was with the now-defunct Bidvest Wits.
Injury-Plagued Progress
Despite the promise he brought, Matlou’s journey at Kaizer Chiefs has faced significant challenges. In 18 games, he has yet to score a goal and has provided just one assist.
These statistics have led to speculation about his future at the club. However, in a surprising turn of events, Matlou was included in the starting lineup for the recent 0-0 draw with Royal AM at FNB Stadium.

Ntseki’s Perspective on Matlou
Coach Molefi Ntseki offered insights into Matlou’s situation, highlighting the impact of injuries on his progress.
Ntseki praised Matlou’s performance, emphasising that the midfielder has shown promise, even dating back to the previous season.
Ntseki explained that injuries had hampered Matlou’s game time, preventing him from participating in pre-season preparation matches.
Despite these setbacks, Ntseki recognised Matlou’s dedication and hard work in training.
Matlou’s Recent Impact
Matlou’s recent contributions have been notable. In the past two matches, he entered the field as a substitute and demonstrated a solid tactical understanding of the game. This tactical acumen has added balance to the team.
In the match against Royal AM, Matlou played a crucial role in a formation that required two number eights, with Yusuf acting as a six.
Matlou’s versatility allowed him to operate as an eight while contributing to the team’s offensive efforts. Although he displayed excellent form, it was evident that he still needed to regain full-match fitness.
Looking Ahead
As Matlou continues to recover and gain match fitness, he will be eyeing another start in the upcoming clash between Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United in the DStv Premiership.
The match is set to take place at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, and Matlou aims to build on his recent positive performances to contribute further to the team’s success.
