Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly Secures Promotion

South African coach Pitso Mosimane has led Al Ahli Saudi FC to secure promotion to the Saudi Pro League. The Saudi Arabian First Division’s rules played an important role in the promotion of Mosimane’s team.

Al Ahli secured a 2-1 win over Hajer Club on Wednesday thanks to an injury-time penalty that gave them three crucial points. The victory put Al Ahli three points clear at the top of the Yelo League and 15 points ahead of Al-Faisaly, the first non-promotion spot.

Although Al Ahli still have four games left to play, Al-Faisaly, led by former Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas, still have five games outstanding and could potentially draw level on points with Al Ahli.

However, the Yelo League rules state that head-to-head record is the first tie-breaker when teams end up on equal points on the log. This means that Al Ahli is guaranteed promotion to the Saudi Pro League. The rule is different from other leagues worldwide where the overall goal difference is the first tie-breaker.

The South African coach has managed to turn around the fortunes of Al Ahli, who were lying in seventh position when he and his technical team joined the club in September 2022. Al Ahli had been relegated to the First Division for the first time in their history.

Along with Mosimane, the club hired conditioning coach Kabelo Rangoaga, head analyst Musi Matlaba, and analyst Kyle Solomon. Maahier Davids joined the club as an assistant coach a few weeks later to complete the South African dream team on the sidelines of the club.

Al Ahli is one of the four founding members of the Saudi Pro League, along with Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al Nassr, the club currently playing for Cristiano Ronaldo. The club has won nine Saudi Pro League titles and a record 13 King’s Cups.
