Stellenbosch put an end to Mamelodi Sundowns’ impressive winning streak in the DStv Premiership, as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in challenging conditions at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday. Sundowns’ coach Rulani Mokwena opted for several changes to the team that played in the Nedbank Cup the previous week.

The match started with a promising effort from Thapelo Morena in the opening minutes, but it went over the bar. Junior Mendieta later forced a save from Sundowns’ goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse. In the 28th minute, Haashim Domingo took a shot that lacked power and was easily saved by Stellenbosch’s goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

Despite the rainy weather, a large crowd turned up at the stadium, and the game was played at a fast pace, with end-to-end action. However, both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances. Jayden Adams came close to scoring for Stellenbosch in the 31st minute with a glancing header from a corner, but it went wide of the post.

Just before halftime, Neo Maema of Stellenbosch tested Sage Stephens, the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, but Stephens was able to make the save to keep the scoreline goalless at the break.

In the 55th minute, Pieterse made a good save from Jayden Adams, and again three minutes later from the same player.

In search of a change in momentum, Sundowns made a triple substitution just after the hour mark, introducing Cassius Mailula, Aubrey Modiba, and Sipho Mbule, who had returned from suspension.

Sundowns’ persistence finally paid off as Mailula scored from close range in the 77th minute, giving them a 1-0 lead. However, Stellenbosch was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute after Mbule fouled in the box. Iqraam Rayners took the penalty and equalized the score. In stoppage time, Sundowns had a chance to snatch the win, but Mokoena’s shot hit the crossbar. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
