Tau’s Remarkable Comeback Earns Praise From Ahly Legend
Percy Tau’s remarkable turnaround at Al Ahly under the guidance of Marcel Koller has received high praise from club legend Emad Moteab.
Tau’s future at the club seemed uncertain following the unexpected departure of Pitso Mosimane. Struggling with fitness issues and facing criticism from former players and Egyptian media, his prospects looked bleak.
However, the arrival of the seasoned Swiss coach, who took over from Ricardo Soares, has sparked a significant improvement in Tau’s form. In the first leg of the semi-finals against Esperance, the Bafana Bafana star showcased his brilliance by scoring two goals in a resounding 3-0 victory in Tunis.
Moteab, a decorated figure at Al Ahly who secured 29 trophies between 2003 and 2018, highlighted the importance of continuity in Tau’s recent success. He emphasized that previously, Tau would only play a couple of matches before succumbing to injuries, resulting in prolonged absences from the team. However, consistent selection, even when not fully match-fit, has allowed Tau to regain his form.

Currently, Tau is in peak physical condition and displaying exceptional artistry on the field. His crucial contributions, including the two goals against Esperance, demonstrate his impact for the team.
Moteab credited Koller for handling Tau and all the players with great skill, noting that the current generation has the potential to achieve the same success as Al Ahly’s dominant period from 2005 to 2008. During that time, the team reached four consecutive finals, winning three of them. Moteab expressed his hope for the team’s triumph in the current year.
Since joining Al Ahly from Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League, the 28-year-old forward has amassed an impressive record of 15 goals and 10 assists in 59 appearances for the Red Devils.
Tau’s resurgence under Koller exemplifies the impact a coach can have on a player’s career. With his renewed form and the support of his teammates, Tau has the potential to further elevate Al Ahly’s success on the field.
