Ten-Man Cape Town City Defy Odds To Hold Sundowns
Sundowns Held to Goalless Draw by Resilient Cape Town City
DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw against Cape Town City at Loftus Versveld on Tuesday evening. Sundowns, who had already been declared champions for a record sixth consecutive season, failed to find the back of the net against a resilient City side.
Guard of Honour for Champions
City gave Sundowns a guard of honour as they walked onto the pitch at Loftus Versveld. Eric Tinkler’s side put up a strong performance, showing respect to the champions, with over 65% of possession in the opening half.
Sundowns Full-Strength Line-up
Despite Rulani Mokwena fielding the ‘full-strength’ starting line-up, they failed to perform at their best, which could be attributed to the questionable condition of the pitch at Loftus. They lacked the fluidity they are known for.
Positives for Sundowns
The second half saw the introduction of Abubeker Nasir and teenage sensation Siyabonga Mabena, who have been praised for their potential and future in the Masandawana set-up.
City’s Ten-Man Hold
City played the last 30 minutes with ten men after Brice Ambina was sent off for two yellow cards. The resilient side held out to secure a point and remain six points behind the CAF Champions League-chasing sides, with six games remaining.
Sundowns’ Lead in the League
Sundowns are now 20 points ahead of Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, and Kaizer Chiefs, who occupy second, third, and fourth place in the league. The draw marks Sundowns’ third successive league game without a win, with the team looking to regain their form in the remaining games of the season.
