The Controversy Behind Mokwena’s Sundowns Tactics

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena laughed off questioning regarding possible time wasting during their 22 draw with Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League. Sundowns maintained their unbeaten record in the competition, and this match was the first time Mokwena was prevented from winning since taking over as sole head coach of the club.

However, members of the Egyptian media questioned him about the final stages of the game after Thapelo Morenas equalizer, saying it was the first time they had seen a South African team employ the strategy ofdefending deep made famous by North Africans in the competition.I dont know, not sure, I dont think [we time wasted], thats your opinion and I respect your opinion but no comment, I dont want to talk about those things I talk football, Mokwena said in the postmatch press conference.

After offering his usual congratulations to the players, coaches, and staff after the match, Mokwena was asked if he felt his team could win the Champions League this season. He replied,No, I didn‘t say beating Al Ahly will win us the Champions League.”

“It‘s the group stages. I‘ve always said from the beginning that there are four strong teams. We need to take it one step at a time. Now, we need to focus on hosting Al Ahly in Pretoria and fighting for points. No points will be given to us, so we need to take it one match at a time.”

Mamelodi Sundowns will now face Marumo Gallants in the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup, Stellenbosch in the league before hosting Al Ahly at Loftus Versveld on Saturday, 11 March.
