Promoting Sustainable Development through Education The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) is committed to fostering sustainable development in developing and newly industrialized countries by providing postgraduate study programs.

The objective is to train local experts who can contribute to the sustainable development of their countries, leading to poverty reduction, improved education, and better healthcare for all. The DAAD offers scholarships to foreign graduates from eligible countries, enabling them to pursue postgraduate or Master’s degrees, and in some cases, even doctoral degrees, in Germany.

What can be funded? The scholarships exclusively support postgraduate courses in Germany. The courses eligible for funding can be found on the List of all Postgraduate courses with application deadlines for the 2024/25 academic year.

Duration of the funding:

The duration of the scholarship varies depending on the study program, ranging from 12 to 42 months.

Value of the scholarship:

The scholarship provides monthly payments of 934 euros for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates, depending on the academic level. Additionally, the scholarship covers expenses for health, accident, and personal liability insurance.

Travel allowances are also provided unless covered by the home country or another funding source. Under certain circumstances, additional benefits such as monthly rent subsidies or allowances for accompanying family members may be granted.

Selection criteria:

Candidates must meet the necessary academic requirements and demonstrate the potential to successfully complete a study program in Germany, including strong academic performance. Applicants are expected to hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject and have at least two years of professional experience.

Motivation for pursuing a development-related career and the willingness to take on social responsibility and drive positive change in their personal and professional environments are also crucial factors in the selection process.
